This week, Kriyabans from the Assisi Institute will share on the spiritual journey as Isha Das turns to other work on our behalf. Today’s reflection comes from Katie Lawler-Melia.
“Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me.” Jesus
As the mother of three children, I get many questions about God and Jesus. Recently, I had this conversation with Sean Francis, my youngest child:
Mom, I love you more than this earth.
I love you more than this earth too.
Mom, but I love you more than outer space.
I love you more than outer space too.
Mom, I love you more than the whole universe!
I love you more than the whole universe too.
Mom, I love you more than God and Jesus love you.
I laughed, pulled him close, and said, “Well do you know what? Wherever you go, no matter who you encounter, you are experiencing God.” Sean sat quietly for a few minutes, internalizing the big idea I had just shared.
“So God is in me?” He pondered some more and exclaimed, “I am just a God house!”
I recently encountered a woman who clearly came from a place of poverty. Her appearance was a bit jarring. I realized I was feeling discomfort, but then I was blessed by remembering a special quote from Mother Teresa: “Every day I see Jesus Christ in all his distressing disguises.” I was reminded of my conversation with Sean, and tears filled my eyes. I truly experienced that woman in front of me as the Divine in that moment, and we had a meaningful conversation. While I forget multiple times a day that “I am a God house,” I believe that as I practice seeing Jesus in all his disguises, I am changing my life and the world for the better.
Jesus, Divine Guru,
Help me to remember:
You are in me
And hiding in everyone I meet
