We stumble and trip over ourselves because we are in the dark; we are not sufficiently attuned to God’s light so as to wisely traverse life’s obstacles. Please do not interpret the word “light” as a metaphor. Light is literally God’s pure and pristine presence within creation, and divine light helps us to see as God sees. Sages refer to this seeing as enlightened wisdom. Initially, the experience of God’s light is joyous and liberating. However, if we remain in the light, it illuminates not only our capacity for wondrous seeing, but also our own blindness, fears, attachments, aversions, prejudices, and defenses. Though this inner exposure is never comfortable, it is a necessary part of the spiritual journey. As we begin to see our own shadows, it is far too easy to become mired in self-hatred or project our darkness onto others and ultimately turn away from the spiritual path. In actuality, this stage of the spiritual life is a testament to our love for God and our spiritual maturity. If we stay the course, our practice of willingness to see our shadows paves the way for our freedom, enlightenment, and capacity to manifest God’s light in the world. Remember, we come from light, and we are light! Jesus told us, “You are the light of the world.”
I want to walk
As a child of the Light,
Even though it will
Be both glorious and painful.
