Good psychology is good spirituality, and good spirituality is good psychology. Both stress the importance of truth, especially in the context of self-knowledge. The shared wisdom on this point underscores an obvious reality: to a certain extent, we all lie to ourselves to protect ourselves from real or imagined danger. Self-deception gives us the illusion of protection, but what it really does is cut us off from our own souls and even from conscious contact with God. Embracing truth can be uncomfortable, but ultimately truth gives us real strength, security, and grounding. God is the word we use to describe Reality, and truth aligns us with Reality. Truth is a dynamic force that always takes us exactly where we need to go by virtue of the fact that truth comes from God and orients us back to God. When motivated by love, truth-telling gives birth to God’s presence in our lives. When you are feeling weak or fragile, simply tell the truth. Do not say you do not know the truth, because that is not true. Psychologist Jordan Peterson says, “In paradise, everyone speaks the truth. That’s what makes it paradise.”
When I am angry or sad,
Fragile or powerless,
I will tell the truth.
