Most of us are wise enough to know that God does not sit on a throne in the sky. However, discarding such false images of God does not negate the truth that God shows up in our lives as a beloved father and mother who watch over us, guide us, and protect us. This conception of God has been part and parcel of human consciousness since prehistoric times, and we have all had moments when the parenthood of God became a palpable reality. In fact, we have these moments every day; we just do not recognize them. Who or what has bestowed the gift of life to planet earth? Who woke us up from our slumber today? Where did the food that nourishes our bodies come from? Where did the people who love and support us come from? Who has fashioned the forces of nature that guide the evolutionary processes? The answer to these questions is simple: the motherhood and fatherhood of God. Our role is to recognize God’s care and protection with heartfelt gratitude.
Divine Mother, Beloved Father,
You hide in plain sight,
But you are all around me.
