Today I experienced a very powerful sermon which did not take place within a church. I tagged along with my wife as she visited her 99-year-old aunt, who resides in a nursing home. My wife’s aunt has a form of advanced dementia and barely noticed we were there. Despite this sad reality, I watched in awe as my wife decorated her aunt’s room for Christmas, organized the clothes in her closet, fed her pieces of ice to soothe her dry mouth, and cleaned her face with a warm cloth. All of this was all done with great tenderness, gentleness, and love. I was challenged to live by the truth that everyone is part and parcel of God and that I am called to treat every person with dignity, respect, and love. If I cannot see God in the people I interact with on a daily basis, including those with different political or religious beliefs, then I will certainly not be able to see God in the context of my meditation and prayer.
