This week I have been writing about the different types of births that can unfold in the lives of human beings. While we cannot undo the natural births we have undergone, we can choose to experience a sacred birth everyday of our lives. Each morning when we awake from our slumber, we can choose to forget our arbitrary missions, rooted in egoic desires. Such forgetting awakens memories of heaven and our soul’s true purpose for reincarnating. According to Valentin Tomberg, “Forgetting is the means of transitioning from one state of consciousness to another… The masters of Raja-yoga, Bhakti-yoga and Jnana-yoga teach the practice of complete forgetting of the phenomenal world with a view of attaining perfect contemplation. The teaching of forgetting is found also in the mystical Kabbalah and in Islamic mysticism, for example, Sufism.”

We choose to forget our own arbitrary missions, that which we propose to do according to our own tastes and interests, by embracing what God wants us to do. Arbitrary missions, even those that are well intentioned, always create the unintended consequence of unnecessary suffering. Through prayer, meditation, study of sacred writings, attunement to the Guru, and serving others, God’s mission becomes our mission.

I can practice forgetting
My stories,
Desires,
And preferences
So that I can become open
To remembering
Where I came from
And why I am here.
