Monday: All of the world’s spiritual traditions talk about the power of surrender in the spiritual life, yet there is much confusion about what surrender actually entails. For example, many people have an uneasy feeling about surrender because they believe it implies passivity, weakness, or victimhood. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Tuesday: The decision to align oneself with God’s truth, beauty, and goodness also implies the willingness to move away from one’s karmic compulsions, habitual addictions, and easy alliances. Particularly in today’s culture, the choice to surrender to God often implies swimming against the tide of social pressure.

Wednesday: Typically, surrender unfolds within a dynamic tension between suffering and grace. We will not loosen our grip on the object of our surrender until the pain it causes us becomes unbearable. Yet, pain in and of itself is not enough. We will only let go of our puny gods (attachments) when we have something bigger and better to deliver ourselves over to.

Thursday: In order for surrender to be real and substantial, it must take the form of surrendering to a God-realized guru.

Friday: Surrender is always a process which is rarely complete at the beginning of the spiritual journey. As we take baby steps toward surrendering, we experience certain positive fruits. These encourage us to take bigger steps that bring bigger realizations.
