Love is a blissful substance that we experience in the depths of our own souls. As Tomberg teaches, love is also an intensity and a cascading current that pulls out of ourselves and into ecstatic union with God’s presence within creation, with the guru’s presence, and with heaven itself. St. Paul describes such an ecstatic experience: “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was carried up to the third heaven, whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was raised up into paradise, whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, and he heard ineffable words, which he is not allowed to express.”

If we are truly in the flow of cascading love we will be pulled out of our interior blindness and imagined separateness and into union with the divine. To the ego this feels like a death, but to the soul it is absolute freedom, bliss, and ecstasy. The experience of falling in love with another person is but a fragmentary taste of what it means to fully fall into love itself, to fall into God. When we fully fall into love, we become love itself.
