God is not a mental construct created by anxious human beings, but an actual Reality. God is a shoreless ocean of loving consciousness. Everything that happens in creation happens within the consciousness of God. Nothing catches God by surprise, including our most self-destructive behaviors. Without ever violating our free will, God works within all of our choices to serve a divine purpose: our highest evolution. If we are going to properly come to terms with the reality of suffering and evil, we must do so in this enlightened context.
God did not cause Putin to invade the Ukraine; that move is on Putin, his cronies, and the karma that drives them. Yet, God will somehow use their diabolical actions to serve the highest good of humanity. To put the Ukraine situation in a much larger context, the human family is going through a period of intense and painful purification. Covid is another wave within this series of purifying waves. To be clear, our actions create these painful waves, and God recycles them, in a manner of speaking, to serve our highest good. It is nearly impossible for the dualistic mind to grasp this truth, but the soul’s capacity for intuition understands the biblical truth, “All things work together for the good.”
Some might be asking why there is a need for purification at all. For me, the answer is obvious. Matters on planet earth have been spinning out of control for a long period of time: racism, environmental degradation, political divisiveness, lack of respect for the unborn, failures of our religious and social institutions, disregard for human rights, the explosion of technology without regard for its moral implications, the ascendency of ideology over and against truth, and a growing secularism that denies our need for the the sacred. Do we really think we could have continued on such a path without serious consequences?
God is love. However, love as it is experienced in time and space is the force that will do what needs to be done in order to serve our highest evolution. I am not saying the world is coming to an end, but the world as we know it is coming to an end. We are presently experiencing the birthing pains of a higher state of consciousness, to a world more firmly grounded in truth, beauty, and goodness. Furthermore, we have the power to minimize the purification process. Every prayer, every meditation, every act of surrender to God, and every expression of selfless service tilts the world in the direction of light. This is not the time for us to be overcome by fear or despair, but for people of good will to courageously sow seeds of faith, hope, and love. Yogananda tells us, “An ideal existence is not impossible, but it is for a different time and realm reserved for those who have graduated from the learning assignments of earth life. For the ordinary man in his present stage of evolution, a life without difficulties would be of little value. No lessons of growth would be learned, no transformations of inflexible natures into godly consciousness, no compelling incentives to seek and know one’s Maker.”
