Francis told us that God is good, but he did not specifically mention that God’s goodness is also absolutely terrifying. For this reason, we shield our eyes from goodness. Too much goodness would undo our lives! Francis was the son of a wealthy merchant, living a comfortable and luxurious life. Then, through the medium of Christ, he experienced a powerful infusion of God’s goodness, and he was never the same. His old dreams died, and his sense of self fell away, giving birth to a new life and a new self. It was not easy for Francis but incredibly glorious, and the world was never the same. How much goodness can we dare to bear? God’s goodness means the end of our frightening stories and the beginning of a life of adventurous freedom.
