Monday: Though life brings us many joys, it also brings many forms of suffering, which is part of the human condition. If Jesus had just skated through life, going from glory to glory, I don’t think most of us would be able to relate to him.

Tuesday: I am always annoyed when people limit Jesus to being a “wisdom teacher.” Of course he was a teacher of wisdom, but he was so much more.

Wednesday: Given the high state of Jesus‘ consciousness, I do not think the horrific events of his last week on earth caught him by surprise. I think he saw what was coming, yet he consciously embraced the suffering that was to visit him.

Thursday: Jesus voluntarily entered into the darkest aspects of the human condition to transform it from the inside out in order to bring life out of death once and for all. Gospel readings tell us that Jesus prayed, that he sweated blood, and that angels came to minister to him. Let’s understand these one at a time.

Friday: Properly understood, Jesus’ death on the cross was a step forward in the evolution of the human race. Beyond teaching us how to discover our true identity as children of God, Jesus came to redeem history, to infuse it with the organizing force of God’s truth, beauty, and goodness.
