Two questions in reference to God’s mercy are worth our reflection: what do we mean by God‘s mercy, and why do we need it? To start with, mercy is really an expression of God‘s love. Divine Love is not a sentimental emotion, but an actual force that heals what has been broken, restores what has been lost, and opens us to new possibilities. Though the energy of mercy impacts our psychological state of mind in a positive way, its origin is not the human psyche, but the very heart of God. We are in need of mercy because we all fail to a lesser or greater extent to live up to our ideals. Don’t we all have regrets? Our regrets can lead us to experience debilitating despair, crippling guilt, and toxic shame. These difficult emotions will suffocate our hearts with pain and fear. Tragically, such a heart is incapable of receiving or giving love, which only deepens our suffering. The only antidote to a suffocating heart is not endless analysis, but God’s merciful love. There is no sin, no failure, no injury that cannot be forgiven. This is why we say love is the most powerful force in all of creation! God‘s merciful love empowers us to begin anew.

Divine Mother,
The only path
To healing my suffocating heart
Is your mercy.
