In yesterday’s reflection, I stated that God’s mercy is nothing other than God’s unconditional love. The experience of mercy is the energy of God’s love reaching into our hearts. If the truth be told, God’s mercy is an ever-present reality, offering us a fresh start each and every moment of our lives. God is a simpleton who only knows how to love, how to heal, and how to beget and restore life. But there is a catch: only love is capable of receiving love. Like energy attracts like energy. If we do not return God’s love with our own love, then we short-circuit the energetic flow of restorative mercy. We need God’s love to overcome our past and its resulting guilt and shame, and God needs our love in order to help us overcome what is oppressing us. Of course, we all love God because we all cherish the experience of love—God is love. Only one question remains: are we going to withhold our love for God? We are never freer than when we love God.

Divine God,
I am never more free
Than when I love you
And feel your love for me.
