Monday: In the yogic tradition, a sutra literally translates as the word thread. Sutras are threads of truth spoken by a saint or sage from a state of God Consciousness. When they are contemplated in prayer and meditation, they have the power to purify our minds and heal our hearts. This week, I invite you to join me in bringing these sutras from Francis of Assisi into our hearts and the world.
Tuesday: God is a mystery, but a mystery that is endlessly knowable. We know that God is the highest good we can possibly imagine, and more. The only word that even begins to approach the mystery of God is love.
Wednesday: Wisdom is our human capacity of tuning into and understanding the mind of God. We are meant to hear God, to think with God, and to create with God. Wisdom guides us in the direction of what is true, beautiful, and good, and leads us to a good and fruitful life. We do not avail ourselves of wisdom through books and lectures, but in the silence born of meditative communion with God.
Thursday: Rightly understood, beauty is a transformative force. It saves us from the quicksand of a mundane existence and takes us out of the reactive mind. Beauty expands our minds and opens our hearts; it dissolves meanness. As the antidote to despair and cynicism, beauty humanizes us and brings joy into our lives. What breath is to the body, beauty is to the human spirit.
Friday: It can be easy to give an idealistic nod to Jesus’ words, but if we apply them to our present world, they sound foolish and impractical. Yet at some point in the spiritual life, we will have to choose the folly of God‘s wisdom over and against the ways of the world.
