One of the core teachings of both Yogananda and mystical Christianity is the need for Self-realization, the discovery of our true identity. We all tend to identify with who we think we are, which includes an entire collection of our self-constructed images and stories. At best, these cover over our essential selves; at worst, they are filled with anxiety, inadequacy, and a deep sense of shame. These pseudo-selves keep us mired in suffering and ignorance and prevent us from developing our God-given identity.

We are all unique sparks of the Divine, lovingly fashioned in the Divine Image. Imagine a life free of chronic fear and shame, a life without the debilitating stories we have about ourselves. Imagine waking up each morning knowing that God is with you and that heaven is supporting all your noble endeavors. Imagine knowing that all you need to know to live a full life is already within you. Imagine a life rich in meaning, creativity, and love. Imagine knowing that God is working in you and through you to make a difference in the world. It can be a bit frightening to let go of the narratives we have about ourselves, but it is also liberating. Liberation begins with faith in God’s love for us, deepens in the context of our prayer and meditative silence, and ripens when we dare to live from our divine identity.Beloved Divine Mother,
Who do you say that I am?
