Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kriya Yoga a religion?
No! The word “yoga” means union, and the word “kriya” means action. Kriya Yoga focuses on those actions that help to facilitate the experience of union with God. These practices can be integrated into any traditional spiritual path. The Kriya lifestyle helps us to create balance, order, and peace. The Kriya meditation technique helps to purify the nervous system so that it can handle more and more divine energy.
How can I learn about the Kriya meditation technique?
Ideally, it is best to learn the meditation technique from someone who is authorized to teach it. Typically, people go through a period of preparation before Kriya Initiation. At the time of initiation, the technique is taught and a blessing accompanied by a laying on of hands is given.
Can Jesus be my Guru?
Yes! There is nothing in Kriya Yoga that contradicts Jesus’ teachings. Christ is very present to all people, regardless of their religious affiliation. Jesus can belong to us if we are willing to belong to Him.
Is devotion to Yogananda a form of idolatry?
Not at all! We are devoted to a particular saint, be it the Blessed Mother, Padre Pio, St. Francis, or one of the Kriya Gurus, because he or she attunes us to the Holy Spirit. All saints spend their time in heaven doing good on earth and functioning as channels of God’s grace. Many western Kriyabans feel that Yogananda has made them better Christians. Great saints do not belong to any particular faith tradition; they belong to everyone.
Do you consider yourself to be a Guru?
No. I am an imperfect servant of Jesus, Francis, and Yogananda who tries to faithfully represent their teachings so that I may assist people on their spiritual journey.
What are the most important elements of a spiritual life?
God is simple. The spiritual path is simple: surrender everything to God, pray and meditate, stay close to the silence, and seek to be an instrument of God’s love in all situations.
