The loudest voices resonating in our culture are all manifestations of “talking heads,” which are on display on both sides of the political aisle. They remind me of the biblical story of the Tower of Babel: there was much talking but no understanding. To a lesser or greater extent, we are all lost in our thoughts. More accurately, we are possessed by our thoughts. By contrast, the light of wisdom breaks into our closed worlds as a liberating force, offering us a way out of our individual and collective madness. How do we avail ourselves of wisdom? Silence! I am not talking about merely being quiet. I refer to prayerful silence, wherein we are waiting to hear God’s voice by listening to our soulful intuitions and availing ourselves of those subtle beams of light to illuminate our understanding. How do we discern the difference between our own wishful thinking and God’s guidance? We judge something by its fruits. Jesus tells us, “You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”
Guruji,
You stand ready
To liberate me
From all the voices
Inside and around me.
