In the beginning, before the fall of human consciousness, the ego and soul were a harmonious unit. To use a metaphor, the ego was an administrative assistant to the soul, carrying out the soul’s wisdom-filled instructions in the arena of creation. Then, a split occurred, a hostile takeover of sorts. The ego took on an identity separate from the soul and assumed responsibility for all of life’s decisions. The problem is that the ego is not capable of such a task, because it is really a shell; it has no center or substance, wisdom, grace, or love. It is meant to be only a tool in the hands of the soul (and God). This is why everyone who identifies with the ego necessarily experiences a deep sense of inadequacy and anxiety, which all the therapy in the world cannot fix. Neither can awards, diplomas or other people’s praise. Only our surrender to the soul and God can save us from the ego’s tyranny.

Dear God,
May I live from my soul,
And not my ego,
And understand which one
Is speaking to me.
