Celebrations: Walking with God
on the El Camino and Beyond

photo-2_SMSome 800 plus years ago St. Francis, the patron of The Assisi Institute, began his Order of Friars Minor. He revolutionized the existing paradigm of religious practice and brought about a renewal of faith everywhere the Franciscan’s shared the message. A new idea: a service-oriented celebration of life available to all who wished a deeper relationship with their God. These Franciscans also were and are known for their Spirit of party and celebration. Not an earthbound revelry saluting the appetites but a genuine celebration of life and all its gifts.

This October I am celebrating all that I have been given by walking the Camino de Santiago from St. Jean Pied au Port, France to the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago Spain, a journey by foot of some 500 miles. Assuming I complete this journey I will celebrate: 40 years as a sober man, 40 years as a meditator, 13 years as a Kriyabon, 13 years cancer free, 35 years married to a wonderful woman and know the joy of having a son a daughter and two wonderful grandchildren. I am also celebrating 20 years as a Hospice nurse and my 70th birthday.

photo-1_SMI ask you all to join in my celebration. At The Assisi Institute everyday is a celebration of life. Most recently we saw two of our regulars, Denis and Christianne marry, we saw our beloved Swami Purnima raise to another level of ministry, and each month we find newcomers investigating the possibilities of a deeper walk with God and themselves. And when sadness and grief visit following the loss of a loved one we can celebrate the precious life that has been shared with us.

Our Assisi Institute is a fountain of life. My wife Liz and I have lived at Assisi since shortly after Assisi relocated. I have been a sometimes janitor, watchman, gardener, teacher and pinch-hitter for our leader Craig. I offer my Camino walk as a gift to Assisi, an opportunity to raise funds for the needs of the Assisi community. I ask you all to sponsor me, and fellow Kriyabon Dave, on our Camino trek. Proceeds will help keep Assisi warm in Winter, cool in Summer and solvent all year long.

To give, please click the PayPal link below (no account necessary), or place a check in one of the donation boxes at The Assisi Institute. Let’s keep the party going!
