The great psychologist Carl Jung tells us, “Modern people do not see God because they don’t look low enough.” Translation: God is present in the depths of our individual and communal chaos and the suffering that comes with it. In the archetypal story of Noah and the flood, we know that only Noah’s life and the lives of his family members were spared. Was this because God loved Noah more than the people who died in the flood? No! My point is this: we are told, “Noah walked faithfully with God.” Noah prayed, listened to his most interior conscience, attuned himself to inspired wisdom, looked for the hand of God within the circumstances of his life, and sought to surrender himself to God’s will. All of these actions allowed God to work with Noah and guide him through the surrounding chaos. The message for us is simple. In these chaotic times we must endeavor to find God within the chaos. We must trust that God will guide us in every aspect of our lives and do our best to surrender ourselves to the protective ark of God’s will. Meditate on these inspired words from Yogananda’s cousin Sri Aurobindo: “The more complete your faith, sincerity, and surrender, the more will grace and protection be with you. And when the grace and protection of the Divine Mother are with you, what is there that can touch you or whom do you need to fear? A little of that protection will carry you through all difficulties, obstacles and dangers.”
