The Festival of Diwali is not just about physical sunlight, but also spiritual light. Spiritual light, otherwise known as divine energy, is a very real force. Because we live in a world that is limited to a materialistic world-view, many people do not believe that there could be anything but physical matter and do not allow for such things as a spiritual world or spiritual forces. Subsequently, our capacity for spiritual sight is greatly diminished. If we are willing to open our minds and our hearts, however, we can learn to perceive this transcendental light. Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, talked of an experience of spiritual light that was the beginning of his recovery from addiction to alcoholism. He tells us, “Suddenly the room lit up with a great light. I was caught up into an ecstasy which there are no words to describe.” Most of us are not going to experience that kind of immediate spiritual transformation, but every sincere prayer and dedicated meditation enhances our capacity for enlightened living. Thus, pray, meditate, and lovingly serve those God has placed in your life!
The more I can open
My mind and heart,
The more I can begin
To perceive Spiritual Light.
