Have you ever noticed that the people who are the most loved are those who give the most love away? This is not an accident. Jesus, embodying the very love of God, tells us why in today’s Gospel. In Luke 6:27-38, we read, “Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”
To understand Jesus’ message, we must remember God has created the cosmos with mathematical precision. Life unfolds according to eternal truths that function at all times and in all places. Here, Jesus is summarizing the metaphysical law of reciprocity. Whatever we give to the world, the world gives back to us. This is especially true when it comes to love. Doors open that otherwise would not be opened. The more we give love away, the more it comes back to us, overflowing and poured into our hearts. Love is the one inexhaustible resource, as Sri Yukteswar teaches us in the words, “Love is God.”
In order for our hearts to manifest love, we must keep them pure. The heart is a spiritual conduit that channels God’s love to the world. If our hearts are polluted by fear, agitation, divisiveness, and dark desires, we will not be open to love. Your heart is your throne, your source of truth, courage, and compassion, your pathway into union with God. Never abandon your throne! We must only allow the light of truth, beauty, and goodness to find a place in the cave of our hearts. More than ever, the world needs the warmth that can only come from a pure heart. Yogananda tells us, “Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts.”
Always,
May I remember to
Breathe truth, beauty, and goodness,
Into the cave of my heart.
So that I may be a channel
Of Divine Love.
