One Christmas, a disciple of Yogananda’s gave him a squirt gun as a present. Saying nothing, Yogananda tucked the gift within the folds of his swami’s robe. For weeks afterwards he gleefully went about squirting many of his followers. Though he was a great saint, Yogananda clearly possessed many childlike qualities. Children come into the world much more connected to God. The fruit of that connectedness is that they laugh, play, and exhibit far more joy than the average adult. They have a natural transparency to truth, beauty, and goodness. But after much disappointment, suffering, and adult conditioning, children tend to lose contact with their souls, and their natural capacity for curiosity and joy diminishes greatly. Ironically, an infallible sign of spiritual maturity is the return of childlike qualities. That is why saints and mystics are typically the happiest people on the planet. Today, don’t take yourself so seriously. Choose to notice beauty and goodness wherever it arises, and remember to laugh!

Divine Mother,
Heavenly Father,
Help me to remember
How to be like a happy child!
