God does not have parts or categories. God does not have moods. God is simple. God is love, only love. To say that God is love is to say that God is the perfect, non-dualistic synthesis of all that is true, beautiful, and good. Yet, there is a qualification: when the force of God’s love enters creation it takes form in and through various manifestations. For example, love shows up in time and space as joy or bliss, but it is also expressed as wisdom. In fact, we may say that love is always the marriage of blissful joy and inspired wisdom. When we focus only on the blissful aspects of love and ignore the reality of wisdom, love ceases to be love. My wife and I recently spent a weekend babysitting our grandchildren. As you can imagine, there were many hugs and moments of joy-filled love — along with guidance, structure, and discipline. Yogananda was the embodiment of both yogic bliss and profound wisdom. Lovingly wise and wisely loving, Yogananda knew how to love people in a way that served their highest good. May we endeavor to do the same!
Divine love, true love,
Is both blissful joy
And inspired wisdom.
