Surrender is always a process which is rarely complete at the beginning of the spiritual journey. As we take baby steps toward surrendering, we experience certain positive fruits. These encourage us to take bigger steps that bring bigger realizations. We all renege on our surrender to God at times. Taking back control causes us great suffering because we know the painful difference between merging with God and merging with the ego. In time, however, surrender becomes steady and stabilized, and we find that we are living a divine life. This does not mean that pain will not visit us; it will. Living a divine life does mean that we will have the wisdom to navigate through even the most difficult circumstances, and we will have the strength to overcome all obstacles. Streams of living water will flow from our interior depths, and we will be sustained by manna from heaven. We will know what saints and sages know: surrender is not weakness or passivity, but the supreme act of loving God and being loved by God.
Each step I take
Toward complete surrender
Will bring greater blessings
And greater freedom.
