We must come to terms with the truth that the majority of the world operates under an egoic illusion and is out of touch with reality. Another term for this phenomenon is mass psychosis; yogis call it maya. Tragically, the world’s insanity has become so much the norm that we barely recognize the craziness surrounding us. Examples abound: the epidemics of addiction, depression, anxiety, dread, and suicide, despite our material abundance; the disregard for the dignity of the human person on all levels of life; the phenomenon of sex trafficking; the erosion of basic human rights; racism and tribalism; our inability to communicate with those holding different perspectives; the expanding gap between the rich and the poor; and the fact that we are on the verge of a world war are all manifestations of the collective madness holding sway over planet earth. In our postmodern perspective, more and more people scoff at the idea of belief in God or a Transcendent Reality. It is getting harder and harder to get people to believe even in love. A young person recently told me that Dr. Martin Luther King‘s belief in the power of nonviolent love for societal change “was no longer relevant.”
Now that my rant is over, I will state my point: those of us endeavoring to live a spiritual life are called to organize our minds, hearts, and lives from a higher, transcendental source. As citizens of heaven, we are charged to seed planet earth with God’s truth, beauty, and goodness. As Jesus taught us, we do this by making God our first and primary love, and from this divine love affair we love others as extensions of ourselves. We live from the depthless well of God’s stillness, and from this stillness God’s wisdom and love bubbles up into our hearts and minds. Thus, love guided by divine wisdom becomes the organizing energy of our lives. We increasingly recognize people as our brothers and sisters, even if their political and theological perspectives differ from our own. More and more, our lives are spent in the service of others. Living as instruments of God’s goodness in the world brings us great peace, joy, and strength. We act as a counterforce to the world’s insanity and foster the marriage of heaven and earth. This is our hope, and in this way, we build a brighter and better future.
Divine Mother,
I am privileged to be
A citizen of heaven
Who lives in this
Beautiful but insane world.
