The spiritual life is breathtakingly simple. It is all about love and attention. We attend to whatever we desire, cherish, and love, and ultimately, we become those things. If we are in love with our own egos, for example, we become more egotistical. If we love money, we become greedy. And if we love God, our lives become a divine affair. We must make the effort to attend to God, sometimes great effort. However, when we place our hearts and minds on God and guru, something magical happens: we are pulled into the gravitational field of their grace, peace, strength, intelligence, bliss, and silence. God is always attending to us, even desiring us, with depthless love. Yogananda tells us, “Build your inner environment. Practice Silence! I remember the wonderful discipline of the Great Ones. When we used to talk and chatter, they would say: “Go back into your inner castle.” It was very hard to comprehend then, but now I understand the way of peace. Through the portals of silence the healing sun of wisdom and peace will shine upon you.”
Through the portals of silence
The healing sun
Of wisdom and peace
Will shine upon me.
