God comes to us as a great and powerful light which enables us to see clearly what is inside of us. At times, this “shadow work” can be very uncomfortable. However, if we stay present to the intensity of God’s light, allowing it to purify our hearts, something marvelous happens: we are given the gift of clairvoyance, that is, being able to see as God sees. The capacity for clairvoyance, or enlightened discernment, liberates us to recognize the destructive machinations of the ego, to avoid unnecessary suffering, to see the positive and life-giving potential that is in front of us, and to align our lives with the highest truth, beauty, and goodness. God’s light is the very essence of freedom because it bestows wisdom. Yogananda tells us, “The greatest sin is ignorance. And the greatest virtue is wisdom.
