God is love, only love. Therefore, God’s every action toward us is a loving action, intended to further our spiritual evolution. At times, God’s love comes to us as divine fire, but never to punish and always to purify us of ignorance and all that obscures our vision. The Divine Fire of the spiritual life is not pleasant. However, if we endure the process with faith in God’s providence, something wondrous and marvelous occurs: God’s love becomes a consciously permanent presence within our awareness and the preeminent force that guides our thoughts, imagination, and will. Then, our lives unfold within a luminous light, regardless of external circumstances. This is enlightenment. Saint John of the Cross tells us, “Man being impure and weak is ordinarily enlightened in darkness, in distress and pain. The sun’s rays are painful in their light to weak eyes until the fire of love, purifying him, shall have spiritualized and refined him, so that being made pure he may be able to receive with sweetness, like the angels, the union of this inflowing love.”
