Two forces operate within human history and within our personal lives: the impulse toward a life which is divine, loving, and abundant, and the degenerative inclination characterized by division, destruction, and death. We see these very real forces on full display in the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people are displaying remarkable resilience, courage, and dignity in the midst of a horrific situation. By contrast, Putin personifies those demonic energies resulting in the degradation of all that is true, beautiful and good.

We must realize that these two primordial forces are at work in each of our own lives. For this reason, Jesus repeatedly told his disciples and us to “stay awake,” that is, to be ever-discerning as to the energies that are guiding our lives. Of course, such wakefulness is grounded in the loving discipline of meditation. Having said that, let me offer you this practice as a means of aligning yourself with heaven’s highest light: lovingly speak the truth. To the degree we speak truth motivated by love, our words become a living prayer, and therefore, our lives become a living prayer.

When I seek the truth in my thinking,
When I speak the truth lovingly,
And when I act only with integrity,
My thoughts, words, and actions become a prayer.
