How do we know we are living from our souls? For the sake of brevity, today I will focus on one particular soul quality: depth. By depth I am not referring to one’s intellectual abilities, intensity of emotion, or passionate vitality. Soulful depth reveals the very essence of God in many ways: enlightened clarity, deep insight and thought, exquisite joy, mountain-like solidness, radical honesty, personal responsibility, robust laughter, authentic tears, profound aliveness, irrepressible generosity, wise compassion, total involvement in life, healthy humility, the marriage of fluidity and stability, and, of course love. This list is actually the short version! You know when you are in the presence of such a person. Without trying, they either inspire or challenge you; either way an encounter with them is always very real and sometimes too real. All the saints and sages we honor were people of great depth. The good news is that God’s depth is infinite, and because we are created in God’s image, there is no limit to our capacity for depth. We are destined to spend eternity diving into God’s depthless depths. Such diving takes courage, the willingness to endure some level of suffering, and childlike faith in God’s immeasurable goodness.
Beloved God,
Your unfathomable depth
Is present within me.
