Monday: The yogic celebration of Diwali, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, attempts to counter the chilling effects of winter’s darkness. Especially with covid still lingering in the background of our lives, we must work to bring light and festive joy into our day-to-day existence. Most importantly, we must endeavor to bring the warmth of God’s light into our hearts and minds.

Tuesday: We humans are interesting creatures. Like animals, we have bodies, and during the winter months our bodies tend to go into hibernation mode and our internal systems slow down. While this is not altogether bad, too much hibernation is bad for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. We must remember that we are so much more than animals; as spiritual beings made in God’s image, we have the capacity to transcend our instinctive tendencies.

Wednesday: The Festival of Diwali is not just about physical sunlight, but also spiritual light. Spiritual light, otherwise known as divine energy, is a very real force. Because we live in a world that is limited to a materialistic world-view, many people do not believe that there could be anything but physical matter and do not allow for such things as a spiritual world or spiritual forces. Subsequently, our capacity for spiritual sight is greatly diminished.

Thursday: Diwali and the Christian celebration of Advent are an invitation to look above to heaven’s luminous light. We know that we are in the light because we feel more alive, we see with clarity, and we are strengthened to do what is noble and life-giving.

Friday: The primary way that we see and experience God’s light, spiritual light, is through those people who are reflecting it. Think of Jesus, Yogananda, and Anandamayi Ma. They reflect God’s light in an absolutely pure manner.
