The birth of Jesus the Christ serves one purpose and one purpose only: to inaugurate the healing of this fallen world in order to bring us back to the intention of the original divine creation. At the center of the Christmas drama is a simple Jewish girl, Mary. Her simplicity, however, is misleading. We are told that she is a virgin who is full of grace. My point is this: virginity and grace go hand in hand. Spiritually speaking, a virgin is one who absolutely cooperates with the Divine, especially when it comes to the miracle of creation. God is always working to create the human experience anew, to give birth to new possibilities for all of us. Within the material world, we are the vehicles through which God redeems the human race. In order for God to use us, God requires the reemergence of our purity, our love of truth, and our obedience to God’s will. Mary perfectly embodied this virginal spirit in her response to the angel Gabriel when she said, “Let it be done unto me according to thy word.” Valentin Tomberg tells us, “Virginity is therefore the unity of that which is above (heaven) and that which is below (earth).”

Divine Mother,
May I have the desire and the grace
To completely cooperate
In your creative miracles.
