Without mothers, none of us would exist. All of history’s enlightened leaders, illumined visionaries, and cultural heroes have been gifted to us through the grace of motherhood. This is certainly true of Jesus. Catholic and Orthodox Christians have given Mary the hallowed title of “Mother of God.” Yet birthing God’s presence in the world is not just for a few holy women. Rather, it is the vocation of every sincere spiritual person. Through what we say and do, our religious and spiritual beliefs become a living reality. All of us are called to raise the world to God and to bring God down to earth. Mary’s life gives us the map to fulfill this sacred mission. Every time she was given a difficult charge she said yes, even if it put her in grave danger or meant that she was called to witness her son’s agonizing death. Each yes that Mary gave to God was deeper and more penetrating than the last. Today, when you enter into the prayerful silence, dare to say yes, not with your head, but with your heart and soul. Say yes often, with ever-deepening sincerity. To the degree that we say yes to God, we allow God to say yes to us.
Divine Mother,
With all my heart,
I say yes.
