Lahiri Mahasaya
Lahiri Mahasaya was born on September 30th 1828 in the village of Ghurni in Bengal, India. Lahiri’s guru Mahavatar Babaji appeared to him while he was hiking in the Himalayan foothills near Ranikhet. In fact, their meeting was a wonderfully blissful reunion in that they had been together in many lifetimes. Immediately, Mahavatar Babaji initiated Lahiri in the ancient path of Kriya Yoga and gave him the task of bestowing the sacred techniques on all sincere seekers. From his simple home in Banaras, Lahiri Mahasaya initiated many devotees into the practices of Kriya Yoga. He was the first to teach the lost science of Kriya Yoga in modern times. Truly a groundbreaking figure in the renewal of yoga within India, his influence spans the globe.Yogananda says, “As the fragrance of flowers cannot be suppressed, so Lahiri Mahasaya, quietly living as an ideal householder, could not hide his innate glory. Devotee-bees from every part of India began to seek the divine nectar of the liberated master… The harmoniously balanced life of the great householder-guru became the inspiration of thousands of men and women.” Yogananda’s parents were devout disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, and when Yogananda was born they brought him to the great guru for a blessing. At that moment, Lahiri predicted, “Thy son will be a yogi. As a spiritual engine, he will carry many souls to God’s kingdom.” Clearly, his prediction came to pass. Lahiri Mahasaya left his body on September 26th 1895, but sincere practitioners of Kriya Yoga can experience his bliss-filled consciousness. The gurus remain available to devotees even after they have left the body. Autobiography Of A Yogi includes a fascinating and inspiring account of Lahiri Mahasaya’s life.
