In case you have not noticed, life is becoming increasingly complex. The more complex life becomes, the more we should strive for simplicity. The goal of the spiritual life is to become increasingly simple as we focus on one unifying purpose: to become love by loving God, who is love. All worthwhile accomplishments arise from the realization of the reality of love. Ultimately, love is impossible to define because God is love, and God is impossible to define. Yet, we know love when we see it. Love simultaneously humanizes and divinizes us; it elevates and expands us. Love makes us generous, strong, and merciful. We avail ourselves of the energy of love not through a sentimental heart, but a soft, open heart. It takes faith in God’s goodness and much courage to allow our hearts to open because we will feel our pain and the pain of others, but we will also experience unspeakable joy, and from this joy we will bless and save the world. Prayer is exposing our hearts to God, so that God can expose God’s heart to us. Meditation is loving God, waiting on God, and allowing God to fill us with God-ness, with love. The Bible tells us that at the end of time “God will be all in all.” At that time, love will penetrate each and every person and become the energy that defines and propels us individually and collectively. Let it begin today, with you and me.

Beloved,
Help me to settle
Into simplicity
And to surrender
the ego-food
Of complexity.
