Patanjali’s yamas and niyamas are some of the most timeless and relevant guidelines for living a spiritual life. Surrender known as Ishvara Pranidhana is the the fifth and final niyama. Surrender – presupposes that there is a divine force at work in our lives. Ultimately this guideline invites us to surrender our egos, open our hearts and accept the higher purpose of our being.

Surrender is difficult for us to as we like to have control, a sense of control gives us security in an otherwise unpredictable flow of life. To train ourselves to surrender we must release our resistance and rigidity (letting go of how we have always done things), engage fully and emotionally with allowing our higher purpose to unfold and accept that life knows what to do better than we do.  The divine force that runs the universe is always calling the shots. When we realize and embrace this we open ourselves up to the depth and growth that the universe wants us to experience in every given moment. We must devote ourselves to the idea that that everything that has happen, will happen and does happen around us happens for us, not to us. Each and every moment is an opportunity to let the divine will in to work in ways only it knows best.
