This week, I have been using the archetypal story of Noah as a metaphor for the waters of chaos which appear to be closing in on all of us. The ark represents God’s protective presence, wisdom, and stabilizing strength, and love. Noah and his family sought refuge not in politics, power, or popular opinion, but in God’s absolute goodness. I am not suggesting that we abandon the world but rather that we engage it from the ark of an enlightened awareness and God-consciousness. We must live as citizens of heaven while serving and working in the world. And just as Noah ushered all of God’s creatures onto the ark of God’s protection, the Guru guides us into the citadel of God’s unfailing steadiness, into communion with each other, and into the depths of our own sacred souls. When the waters of chaos threaten to engulf you, cling to the Guru, pray, meditate, and listen to that still, small voice percolating within your silent depths. The world is going to do what it will; there is not much that any of us can do about it, at least in terms of the big picture. Our task is to surrender everything to God and to abide in the Guru’s loving arms.
Guruji,
You will guide me
Into the citadel
Of God’s unfailing steadiness.
